Advantages Of Foam Pipe Insulation

Foam Pipe InsulationAlthough it should not be the first line of defense in your soundproofing method, foam pipe insulation can be used to cut down on pipe noise inside of your walls.  However, the minimal sound reduction is not the reason why most people insulate their pipes.  Foam pipe insulation is primarily used as a way to conserve energy and water in your home. It is an extremely affordable way of cutting down your energy costs as well as increasing the comfort level in your home.  Advantages of foam pipe insulation include:

  • Hot Water Loss Reduction – Insulating your hot water pipes is beneficial for a variety of reasons.  Primarily, the water in insulated pipes can be as much as 2-4 degrees warmer than a non-insulated pipe meaning you don’t have to use as much hot water in the shower.  This reduced hot water usage relieves the demand for hot water on your tank using less energy and lowering your gas or electric bill.
  • Less Waiting - Insulated pipes keep water hotter in the pipes for longer than non foam pipe insulation installations.  Meaning, you wait less time for hot water to arrive in your shower, increasing convenience, and lowering your waste level of water.
  • Eco friendly - Saving water and using less energy to reheat that water left in pipes between showers is better for the environment from all anlges.
  • Reduces dripping and sweating on hot and cold pipes from condensation.

Types Of Foam Pipe Insulation

There are more than 13 different types of insulation for pipes including foam pipe insulation.  Each has specific advantages and disadvantages, however for most people the upfront costs, vs. the potential energy bill savings are important.  Below are the most popular and effective types of foam pipe insulation.  The most important factor to consider when choosing pipe insulation is the “R” value or the thickness of the foam.

  • Polyethylene Foam Pipe Insulation – The most common and easiest foam pipe insulation to install is made from ⅜” or ⅝” thick polyethylene.  It installs easily by sliding the pipe into the pre-slit edge and sealing together with the included adhesive.  Usually sold in 6-8 foot sections, you can cover a large portion of your homes hot water pipes with ease.  Expect an “R” value between 2.5 and 3.5.
  • Fiberglass Pipe Wrap – Fiberglass has been used for decades because of it’s R value and it is flame retardant.  Fiberglass pipe wrap or insulation is recommended for areas with a risk of fire such as pipes extremely close to the hot water heater.
  • Other Options – There are several other pre-slit tubing and wraps available, but for most households foam pipe insulation is recommended for its high R value, and ease of installation.
